Why Extreme Calorie Restriction Backfires: The Metabolic Cost
Severe calorie restriction (500/day) **triggers survival mode**, slowing metabolism and spiking cortisol while your body breaks down muscle for fuel instead of fat. Muscle loss from extreme dieting **permanently reduces daily calorie burn**. Studies show 500-calorie diets caused more muscle loss than moderate 1,250-calorie approaches with similar weight loss. **Moderate deficits preserve muscle** and stabilize hormones, and maintain normal metabolism: the sustainable approach your body doesn't resist.

Show HN: Robust LLM Extractor for Websites in TypeScript
We've been building data pipelines that scrape websites and extract structured data for a while now. If you've done this, you know the drill: you write CSS selectors, the site changes its layout, everything breaks at 2am, and you spend your morning rewriting parsers.
LLMs seemed like the obvious fix — just throw the HTML at GPT and ask for JSON. Except in practice, it's more painful than that:
- Raw HTML is full of nav bars, footers, and tracking junk that eats your token budget. A typical product page is 80% noise. - LLMs return malformed JSON more often than you'd expect, especially with nested arrays and complex schemas. One bad bracket and your pipeline crashes. - Relative URLs, markdown-escaped links, tracking parameters — the "small" URL issues compound fast when you're processing thousands of pages. - You end up writing the same boilerplate: HTML cleanup → markdown conversion → LLM call → JSON parsing → error recovery → schema validation. Show HN: Book Grounded AI Learning
I constantly ask Gemini/ChatGPT/Claude about books on a certain topic, then ask the llm to give me a summary of the book its chapters - this helps me: 1. keep the llm grounded as a real expert (instead of saying pretend to be an engineering expert, give it a distributed systems book and then ask opinions on it) 2. helps me discover and buy books! Once i go through book concepts and chat with llm about it, i'm more convinced to buy it and dig deeper on low level on it
So i built an app through Replit on it, try it on
https://teach-me.replit.app/
Cheers!
